Seniors Episode Nine: Spring Break (Super Chiller) by R. L. Stine

**This blog contains adult language.**

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!!!  This is a recap blog which means I read the book and tell you everything that happens so you don't have to read it yourself.  Do NOT continue to read unless you want to know who the bad guy/girl/Velma is.

Tag Line: Sun, fun...Murder!

From the Back of the Book: It's Spring Break!  Josh Maxwell is ready to party at Trisha Conrad's ranch in Arizona.  Meanwhile, his stepsister Josie is hanging out with a cute college guy back in Shadyside.  But Josh and Josie are about to find out that there's no break from the senior curse - and that wherever they go, the evil will follow...

This book was published in 1999 and this is my first time reading it. It's book 9 in the series and the other 8 books are linked below.

The beginning of each book gives us a “yearbook” with all the characters. I'll summarize.

Trisha – lists her likes as shopping and her dislikes as “rich girl jokes

Clark – lists his likes as Debra and his dislikes as garlic

Jennifer – lists her likes as basketball and her dislikes as being a Fear in a Fear-hating town

Jade💀(RIP) – lists her likes as cheerleading and her dislikes as ghosts

Gary – lists his likes as art class and his dislikes as cops

Kenny – lists his likes as Jade and his dislikes as kids who torture camp counselors

Debra💀(RIP) – lists her likes as Clark's poems and her dislikes as possessive boyfriends

Mira😷(currently institutionalized) - lists her likes as band boys and her dislikes as psychics

Danielle💀(RIP) - lists her likes as dancing and her dislikes as being cold

Justin💀(RIP) – lists his likes as The Beastie Boys and his dislikes as being chased by Ty and Gary

In the last book, Ty fell in love with a ghost named Amy who was really just a revenge plot enacted by Marla, Phoebe and Trisha because Ty was dating all three of them at once. Eventually he's run over by Justin who is just tired of Ty in general. Then Justin is killed by the ghost of Amy. I think. Or maybe it was an ill placed tree root. I don't know. It was all pretty stupid.

PART ONE

This book begins on a plane with Josh, Mickey, Deirdre and Gary who are flying out to meet Trisha on her family's ranch in Tucson, Arizona. Gary is being a total dick to the flight attendants which isn't too surprising since Gary is a dick in general. They're all pretty excited to be spending Spring Break away from Shadyside, although Mickey is a little bummed that his girlfriend Dana was too sick with the flu to make it. They're expecting some wild times because Trisha's parents are in Australia which means they'll have the entire place to themselves.

Send the parents of the MC off on a trip early in the book?  Check

At one point in the first couple of pages, Mickey refers to cacti as “those weird green trees with thorns all over” and I think that really sets the tone for this entire stupid book.

They land and go to baggage claim. Josh turns into Bella Swan at this point and sort of bumbles his way through the line. He bumps into some rough looking, half-drunk cowboy and elbows him pretty hard. Then he stomps on the guy's foot and knocks off his stetson and it gets crushed under someone's feet. The dude is pretty pissed and tells Josh they're going to handle this outside.  And then we get our first chapter-ending cliffhanger.  Will Josh get his face pounded in or will he escape the fate he deserves?  I know we're all sitting on the edges of our seats here.

Josh runs away like the little punk he is. He herds the others into the van Trisha has brought along to take them back to the ranch because ranches are chocked full of vans. For some reason, the drunk dude shouts his own name after Josh as he runs off (it's Clay) which just seems really weird to me but this is a Stine so I guess we'll just ignore that and move on.

Almost immediately, Josh realizes they're being followed and somehow identifies Clay through the non-existent back windows of this van. Clay is driving like a “maniac” and crashes into the back of the van.

{{{GA........

No, really. It does.

Clay hits them from behind THREE TIMES at full speed without somehow crashing them and then pulls up alongside the van on the wrong side of the highway and yells at them to pull over. Which they hear. Somehow. Despite driving 50mph+ down a highway with the windows up and the air conditioner on. Maybe they read his lips. I don't know. They don't pull over. A semi approaches from the other direction and Clay's car is forced off the road. He gets stuck in the sand and Trisha drives away.

They get to the ranch and Trisha introduces them to Simon the foreman and his daughter Rose. Rose is gorgeous and Josh is pretty immediately smitten with her. Trisha seems to hate her for some reason and goes out of her way to pull rank on Rose and let everyone else know that Rose is just the help. Rose clearly thinks Trisha is just a rich bitch with an attitude and I can't even disagree with her. I super hate Trisha and not just because she has stupid visions.

Josh goes to unpack in the room he'll be sharing with Mickey and realizes that he has the wrong suitcase. There's a gym ID in it that has the name Clay something or other on it and he realizes he grabbed the drunk cowboy's bag accidentally. There's a gun in the bag and that pretty much explains why Clay was chasing them down like a madman.

Josh wants to switch out the bags immediately. For one, he has no clothes and for another, he wants to get rid of that gun. He thinks maybe Clay will stop being mad at him when he has his stuff back. The gym ID helpfully has Clay's full address on it....um.....what kind of gym ID has your address on it? Stine. DO BETTER. Anyway, Josh goes to ask Simon if he can get a ride to Clay's place. Simon can't spare the time to do it and suggests Josh call the airport instead because the airport will send someone out to pick it up. Josh doesn't want to do that because he thinks Clay will see him as a snitch and we all know what happens to snitches. Rose offers to take the bag herself but Josh thinks it's too dangerous for her to go alone so he goes with her.

When they get to the house it looks abandoned. Josh goes to knock and the door opens on its own. He decides to go in and suddenly the house starts to collapse right on top of him.

{{{GASP}}}

LOLZ

It's just an earthquake and the only thing that happened was an empty bookcase tipped over. When he gets back out the the car, Rose says that was a big one and mentions they had a 5.6 or something like that a day before. Which seemed odd to me. When's the last time you heard about Tucson, Arizona having a major earthquake? I mean.....never? So I looked it up. Apparently there is some low level seismic activity that happens out in the desert but nothing that can ever be felt in town. Tucson just doesn't have earthquakes. The story didn't even need one except to set up Stine's cliffhanger because it isn't relevant to the story in ANY way. Do your research, Stine. DO BETTER.

Josh decides to return the bag to the airport the next day instead. I don't know why they don't just do it now. It makes no logical sense. Rose drives him to the mall so he can buy some clothes for his stay.

PART TWO

Now we're with Josie and Jennifer in Shadyside. They're just hanging out polishing each other's nails and reading magazines like teenage girls do. Josie is bitching that her dark purple nails remind her of dried blood because Stine clearly has no fucking idea what dried blood looks like (DO BETTER). She apparently wasn't invited to go to the ranch at all. Jennifer was invited but her parents wouldn't let her go for some reason that is never fully explained.

Jennifer decides they need to do something wild on their spring break since they're stuck at home. She tells Josie to get all dolled up in something that makes her look sexy and older and she'll pick Josie up at nine for a night out.

Jennifer ends up taking her to a bar just outside of town. She has a fake ID and she's borrowed one from Deirdre for Josie to use. Which is a problem for two reasons. First, and this is the only one Stine acknowledges, Josie and Deirdre look nothing alike. But the bigger problem is THAT DEIRDRE IS IN FUCKING ARIZONA AND THERE'S NO WAY JENNIFER COULD BORROW THE DAMN THING FROM HER. Stine. Seriously. DO BETTER. Jennifer tells her not to worry about not looking like Deirdre. If she's confident, she'll pull it off.

Right.

Because that's how bars work.

No one checks ID at the door so Jennifer smugly thinks they're home free. They go up to the bar and suddenly they are grabbed from behind and a voice tells them they're under arrest.

{{{GASP}}}

LOLZ

It's just Matty. He tells the girls he'll score them a beer and directs them to a table where his cousin Mo is sitting. (((Note from future me: I thought maybe Mo might turn out to be a character in this book so I mentioned him but we honestly never see him again.))) Pretty much immediately, all four of them get kicked out for being underage and thus ends our wild night out at the bar.

Matty and Mo drive away, never to be seen again, and the girls walk to Jennifer's car. They're dismayed to see they now have a flat tire but luckily for them two random guys walk up and offer to help. The guys are named Tim and Evan and they're cute enough that the girls allow themselves to be rescued. Jennifer pretty immediately calls dibs on Evan which is fine with Josie I guess. They fix the tire and then invite the girls to go to a “dorm party” with them. Jennifer convinces Josie to go even though Josie isn't sure they should be going anywhere with two random guys they met in a bar parking lot.

Josie would get 1000 survivor girl points here but she goes ahead and gets in the van so she gets 0.

Tim fiddles with the dash of the van for a bit claiming ignition issues and the implication is that he hotwires it. (((Note from future me: He doesn't. I don't know why this part was in here.))) Despite seeing this, the girls think nothing of it and get right in the back of the van. Within minutes, a cop starts chasing them and Tim admits that they stole the van.

{{{GASP}}}

LOLZ

It turns out the cops were after someone else and the van definitely belongs to Tim. They get to campus but there's no party. The guys claim that it must have ended early but the girls aren't buying it anymore. They demand to be taken back to the bar so they can get Jennifer's car. Still, Jennifer gives them both their numbers before she gets out and sets up a date for the next night. This one is pretty dumb.

When they get back to Jennifer's car, they finds her windshield covered in words written in red paint. “Wanna play?” Original. It's not like Stine stole that directly out of a movie or anything. I think Chucky should be suing for copyright infringement.

PART THREE

We're back with Josh. It's dusk and everyone is gathered around the BBQ pit for dinner. There's some random guy there named Roberto who I'm just going to call Rob because I can't be arsed to type in Roberto a hundred times. He's an archaeology student at a nearby college and he's on the ranch because there's a dig on the edge of the property. Rob and Trisha are flirting pretty heavily which isn't a surprise because Trisha is definitely a train that anyone can ride. Gary isn't too pleased about it though. I'm prepared for more possessive violence like in the last book but Gary is all bark and no bite in this one for some reason. Stine can't even remember who his characters are anymore. DO BETTER.

Rose serves up the background exposition. The ranch is named after the Hohokum tribe who used to live in the area. They completely disappeared without a trace over 500 years ago and no one knows what happened to them. The name Hohokum means “vanished ones” which makes me wonder if the tribe was only named after it disappeared. What did they call them before they vanished? The excavation that Rob is assisting with is trying to find some evidence of them and what happened to them.

Josh is super interested in archaeology (I know – I was shocked too) and he and Deirdre begin to petition for a 'field trip' to the dig site. Rose gets all weird about it and basically begs them not to go. She says that the spirits are disturbed and bizarre things have already been happening. Two students suddenly became violently ill (Rob says food poisoning), a tent spontaneously caught on fire (Rob says it was struck by lightning) and a man named Ben was found in a ditch with a broken neck (Rob can't really explain away that one). Rose attributes this all to La Amadora who was a great Hohokum healer. She's protecting their land and striking down anyone who comes too close to sacred secrets. She tells them that La Amadora sometimes appears as an animal (usually a coyote) and sometimes as a woman in a red hooded cape. So....basically Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf all rolled into one.

Mickey has come down with a raging case of 'love the one you're with' syndrome and is hitting on Deirdre pretty hard since Dana isn't around. It's kind of manipulative and gross because everyone knows Deirdre is in love with Mickey. He's not being subtle about it either so I'm sure it's going to get back to Dana eventually. This dude is lucky he lives in a time without cell phones and social media.

As they're hanging out around the fire, Josh hears a shriek in the desert and decides that La Amadora is coming for him. Mickey thinks it was probably an animal but that doesn't reassure Josh since La Amadora can shapeshift. Mickey thinks the only solution to Josh's sudden idiocy is to sneak out to the dig site. I'm not sure I follow this logic but Josh is down to give it a try. Plus, he really wants to see a real archaeological dig.

Deirdre sees them sneak away and runs to join them. She and Mickey flirt the entire way, much to Josh's disgust. I like how they just walk directly to the dig site despite never being told where it is and being on a vast ranch in the middle of the desert where everything just looks like sand and cacti. DO BETTER! They get to the site without getting lost once and immediately hear something rustling around in the sand. Mickey and Deirdre decide the only solution is to stick their tongues in each other's mouths, so Josh goes alone to check it out. As he nears the edge of the dig, someone pushes him into the pit.

Josh isn't hurt but he's landed on some pottery. He carefully picks the pieces up and puts them in his pocket to give to Rob for some reason. I mean, it would have been better for him to have left it where it was so the others would at least know something had been found there.

We skip to the next morning and Rob is furious that the three of them went to the dig and furious that Josh destroyed a potentially priceless artifact. Despite this, he still takes everyone out to the dig site so they can see it in the daylight with all the people there. Rose seems fine as they walk along but when they get to the site she starts shouting that they're disturbing La Amadora.

She's doing something illegal, right? Like she's trying to keep people away from the dig site by doing this whole La Amadora thing? I'm getting a very strong vibe here, y'all......

Rose is still screaming that La Amadora is near and Trisha gets hella annoyed that Rose is stealing the spotlight. There's only one thing to do – have a “vision” and dramatically pass out. In this “vision” she saw a coyote with red stripes and then it howled and everyone vanished into thin air. Riveting stuff. Rose decides she can work with this and she says that La Amadora gave Trisha the vision and that she's coming for them.

Rob has had enough of all the idiots and he suggests they leave the dig site before they embarrass him further. He offers to take them to the saguaro cactus forest. Some of them are hundreds of years old and 40 feet high. He's really tapped into what the kids want to see these days. On the way, Josh and Rob bicker back and forth. Rob can't let the broken pottery go and I can't really blame him. Josh could have ruined years of work by being where he shouldn't have been and then picking it up instead of leaving it where it was.

In the cactus forest, Trisha gets bit by a rattlesnake. Too bad her visions didn't tell her to watch out for that. Rob calls for help as Trisha passes out. Rose can make this fit too and she tells them it might have been La Amadora disguised as a snake.

SIGH

PART FOUR

We're back with Josie. She's on a double date with Tim, Evan and Jennifer. They're having a good time even though the boys are being pretty loud and obnoxious. Josie has decided she really likes Tim even though he has zero redeeming qualities. As they clown in the restaurant making life miserable for everyone around them, she starts to think about the weird message scrawled on Jennifer's car. She wonders if that evil spirit she released with the Doom Spell back in book one is finally becoming relevant again.

At one point she gets up to go to the bathroom. As she's combing her hair, she hears someone whisper “wanna play” but Chucky clearly isn't in the restaurant bathroom so she's confused. Me too, Josie. Me too. When she gets back to the table she finds out that Evan conveniently left for the bathroom right after her but she still thinks she's being stalked by the Doom Spell entity.

The boys suggest a trip to River Ridge after dinner which is a popular makeout spot up on the cliffs. It's deserted when they get there despite the fact we were just told it was super popular. They all get out of the van and go for a walk. Josie doesn't want to go anywhere near the edge because she's afraid of heights but Tim smiles at her and she turns to putty. Josie stands at the edge with Tim behind her, his arms wrapped around her. He asks her to point out her house and she does. Then he whispers “do you like scary movies?” because now Stine is fucking ripping off Scream and then he pushes her off the cliff.

{{{GASP}}}

LOLZ

Not really. He kind of knocks her forward a little but catches her before she falls. He's pretty shaken up by the entire thing, telling her that his foot slipped in the gravel She accepts this and rewards him with her tongue in his mouth.

The next morning, Josie goes out to get the paper and finds the words “wanna play rough?” written in red paint across the walk.

PART FIVE

Back with Josh. He still hasn't taken the suitcase to the airport, by the way. It's been like three days at this point. Trisha is still in the hospital but doing fine and expected to be released the next day. Everyone else makes plans to go to a local drive-in that evening. Josh asks Rose to go as his date but she says she's already seen the movie. He says he'll stay at the ranch with her and this clearly irritates her because she obviously had plans she needed him to be gone for. She sighs and says they can spend the evening getting to know each other and she sounds about as enthusiastic as I feel about the idea.

Josh decides he's falling in love with Rose despite having only 2 rational conversations with her.

SIGH

Rose takes Josh away from the house to go see an owl in a cactus which seems like a pretty lame excuse to get someone out of a house. Was that really the best she could do? Maybe it was the best Stine could do. Josh tells her about being at the dig site the night before and she freaks the fuck out. She screams at him that it was dangerous and he was stupid to do it and then she shows him a scar on her arm. She tells him that it was from an encounter with La Amadora and he's suitably freaked out.

Josh decides that now is a good time to stick his tongue in her mouth but she has other ideas. She tells him that she has something to show him and then she dashes off into the darkness. He has no idea where she's gone. He tries to follow her but runs into a coyote. The coyote pounces on him, tearing his jacket and shirt with its claws. Josh tries to shove it off but it tears off his face.

{{{GASP}}}

LOLZ

Simon shoots it before it actually bites him. Pity, that. Rose shows up and tells Josh that she was waiting for him on the path. Simon chews them both out for running around the desert at night and takes them back to the house. Rose says goodnight at the door and leaves without coming in. When Josh gets to his room he finds it trashed. At first he thinks Clay came looking for his bag but the bag is in plain sight on the floor and the gun is still there. Through the window he sees Rob leaving the house and wonders if Rob is the one who trashed his room in revenge for breaking the pottery.

Later that night, he's awakened by a voice saying “you had no right”. He sees someone in a red hooded robe holding a knife and then Stine cuts to black.

PART SIX

We're back with Josie. She and Jennifer are having a picnic with Tim and Evan. Josie asks them if they are the ones leaving all the painted messages. They admit to it and then the two of them merge into the evil demonic entity.

{{{GASP}}}

LOLZ

It's a dream. Josie runs straight to Jennifer's house to tell her about the Doom Spell and the evil entity. She thinks the entity used the dream to warn her about Tim and Evan because that's what demons do. Josie says she has to know if Tim and Evan are the ones writing the messages so she calls Tim, waking him up. She asks about the messages and he says he was the one who left them.

{{{GASP}}}

LOLZ

It was actually his roommate Chase on the phone. That was the stupidest cliffhanger Stine ever perpetrated.

Tim gets on the phone and denies leaving the messages. He plays the concerned boyfriend for a few seconds and then his call waiting beeps. After leaving Josie on hold to see who it is, he returns and tells her he has to take the call but he'll see her later. Instead of the call disconnecting, Josie can now hear both sides of the other conversation because that's exactly how phones work.

It's Evan on the other line. He and Tim discuss how they've been trying to scare the girls with the messages and all the little accidents and I call BULLSHIT. Bullshit, Stine. Fuck you. The first message was left on the car when the girls were WITH Tim and Evan. There's no way Tim or Evan could have written that message on the windshield. DO BETTER!!!!

Also, it's super fucking convenient that Evan happened to call Tim to discuss this specific thing so early in the morning at the exact same time that Josie called Tim about it. I mean, that's the most epic coincidence that ever coincidented. Stine is REALLY asking us to swallow a huge load of ish in this one.

The boys go on to outline their plan for the evening. They're going to take the girls to the radio tower tonight and then let them get accidentally locked inside so they'll need the boys to rescue them. They figure the girls will be so grateful that they'll definitely get their dicks sucked. The girls decide they need a plan of their own.

PART SEVEN

Back with Josh. He makes a dive for the attacker but misses and somehow ends up wrapped up in Mickey's quilt. This truly is an episode of Scooby Doo. By the time he gets free, the attacker is gone. It should be noted that if the attacker truly wanted Josh dead they could have stabbed him while he was trapped in the quilt. There was ample opportunity there. So clearly the intent is just to scare Josh and not actually harm him. Also, Mickey isn't sleeping in his bed. I wonder where he is??? I hope he brought condoms.

The next morning everyone but Mickey goes horseback riding. He says he just wants to stay in and play video games all day. I'm guessing he's chafed. They get to a dangerous place in the trail and Trisha starts freaking out about that striped coyote vision again. It's the worst possible place to do it and it puts them all in danger. Deirdre freaks right the fuck out and Simon decides they need to turn back because they're scaring the horses which is exactly what they don't want to do. They make it back to the ranch and Josh goes inside to find Mickey stabbed to death in his bed.

{{{GASP}}}

LOLZ

It's just the pillows that have met an untimely end. Mickey is fine. There's a note pinned to the knife that says “Give it back now or this will be you.” Mickey thinks it's about the gun but Josh points out the gun is in plain site and the person would have just taken it if they had wanted it. Mickey really can't muster any enthusiasm for this Scooby Doo nonsense. He says that he has a date to teach Deirdre how to “backstroke”. Josh makes a crack about Mickey being a lousy swimmer and Mickey says he wasn't talking about swimming.

Josh can't shake a feeling of dread. Even making out with Rose doesn't distract him for long. She says that maybe he should call the sheriff's office about the gun and he agrees to consider it but he doesn't actually do it. He doesn't take it back to the airport either.

Josh gets ready for bed but Mickey is clearly sleeping elsewhere again. He's just settled in when someone starts pounding on his door. It's Rose. There was a masked man in a red hoodie trashing her room when she got back to it. He pushed her to the floor and demanded she tell Josh to give it back. Josh still doesn't know what “it” is. He's more convinced than ever that Rob is behind everything. I don't know why. I'm not sure Stine knows why.

The next day, Josh rounds up a posse (Mickey and Gary) to go with him to confront Rob. They walk all the way out to the dig site but Rob isn't there so they have to walk all the way back. That was pointless. When they get back, the girls are waiting with horses to go on a picnic. I'm not sure why they're so eager to get back in the saddle after what happened the day before but here we are. They all set out and head back toward the cliffs because Stine doesn't care about logic or reason when it comes to driving his plot.

Clay is there on the trail and he has a rifle. He orders them off their horses and makes them stand at the edge of the cliff. He orders Josh to give it back but Josh has no fucking clue what Clay wants. The girls are all pretty scared and moving around way more than they should for people standing on the edge of a cliff. Deirdre takes one step too many and falls over the side, plummeting to the rocks below.

No, really. She does. She literally dies. 👻💀👻

Josh tackles Clay and manages to get the gun from him. Rose offers to hold it on Clay because Josh is shaking and clearly has never held a gun before in his life. As soon as it's in her hands, she turns it on Josh and orders him to get back in line. She and Clay are working together.

The 'it' they keep harping on is a small clay statue of a coyote that Mickey has been carrying around in his pocket since the very first day. So....clearly he never changes his jeans. Even after being in the hot sweaty desert on horseback.  {shudder}  The statue was in Clay's bag but it apparently fell out on the patio and Mickey picked it up. Not knowing what it was, Simon told Mickey he could just keep it and Mickey stuck it in his pocket intending to give it to Dana when he got home as an apology for repeatedly fucking her sister. The statue is actually a Hohokum fetish (consecrated item – get your minds out of the gutter) and it's worth over a million dollars.

When Mickey pulls it out of his pocket, Trisha sees that it has red stripes on it and she freaks the fuck out. Clay says they have to get rid of the witnesses but Rose isn't down for that. She never agreed to murder. She was using the story of La Amadora to keep people away from the dig at night so they could steal things. So it really WAS an episode of Scooby Doo all along.

Clay and Rose start fighting and she goes for the gun. In his effort to keep hold of it, he knocks the clay coyote over the side of the cliff and then stupidly dives after it. Josh, for reasons that I'm completely unclear about, dives after Clay to save him. He almost ends up going over too but Rob shows up and somehow manages to pull both of them back up. I must have missed the part where he was the Incredible Hulk. Simon is there too and he calls the police.

PART EIGHT

Josie's plan is for all their friends to dress up as zombies and hide in the cemetery to scare Tim and Evan. When the boys pick them up, Jennifer convinces them to go to the cemetery instead of the tower like they planned by heavily implicating that the boys are about to get some. They get there and the zombies come out and Tim and Evan are satisfyingly scared. I guess. Josie and Jennifer seem satisfied anyway. They can't stop commenting about how good Dana is as a ghost. She looks super ghostly and at one point she even puts her hands through a tombstone. They think it's some kind of prop.

Later they find out that Dana wasn't even there. She got the news about Deirdre and stayed home. So.....so Stine is trying to tell us that the ghost of Deirdre took part in Josie's stupid prank. Because that's what ghosts to with their time.

DO BETTER!!!
