Now that I've finally finished Pike's
Final Friends series, I promised my manager I would start working on
Stine's Seniors series. There are 12 books in this one and a MASSIVE
amount of characters. This book was published in 1998 and I have
read some of them but it's been 6-10 years and I only read them once so I
remember absolutely nothing about them. I don't even remember who
the bad guy is.
The beginning of each book gives us a
“yearbook” with all the characters. I'll summarize.
Trisha – lists her likes as
shopping and her dislikes as “rich girl jokes”
Clark – lists his likes as
Debra and his dislikes as garlic
Jennifer – lists her likes as
basketball and her dislikes as being a Fear in a Fear-hating town

Debra and his dislikes as funeral homes (uh oh, that's two for Debra)

Sigh.
My head hurts already.
Stine begins with Part One.
I'm a little worried that we're going to be bashing about in lots of heads
here.
We begin with Josh. It's the last day
of school before summer vacation and the final school bell has just
sounded. The classroom erupts in celebration as everyone rushes to
GTFO. We get a massive amount of characters right off the bat. Dana
and Marla are singing some song about summertime over by the doors,
Mickey and Gary have pinned down some poor guy named Justin
and they're covering his hair and clothes with chalk dust. Matty is
at the window throwing water balloons on the people below. Mickey
pauses in his chalk assault long enough to rag on Matty for being a
counselor at a fat camp this summer. Matty argues that it's an
exercise camp instead.
Josh makes his way past all the
merriment because he's supposed to be meeting Debra at the tennis
courts. He tells us that he and Debra have something good together
but that doesn't stop him from thinking naughty, naughty thoughts
about Dana as he passes her. He and Debra have been going out for
five months and Josh plans for it to last at least all through their
upcoming senior year.
Odds that Josh and Debra are going to last all through senior year: 10%
When he gets to the court, Debra isn't
alone. Clark is with her and Josh derisively calls him “Count
Clarkula” in his head. Apparently Clark always dresses in black
and slicks his hair back with gel making him look like an old movie
version of a vampire. Josh doesn't like him much. He's irritated
when he sees Clark leaning in close to Debra and he shouts her name,
making the two of them jump apart.
Debra is quick to tell him that Clark
was just helping her because she had something in her eye. Oh,
please. That's what everyone says when they get caught almost
kissing someone else. Josh isn't sure he buys it either. Clark
stands around awkwardly for a few minutes and then takes off. Josh
and Debra volley the tennis ball back and forth for a little bit but
she's lacking energy and finally asks to stop. She says she's tired
and not really feeling well.
Josie rocks up at this point, pissed
off and spitting. Something about her Trig teacher giving her a D
despite all the extra credit she did. She threatens to kill him and
then takes off again.
Odds the Trig teacher's days are
numbered: 50%.
Before Josh and Debra can really react
to that, Trisha appears on the court. She waves at them and then
gasps and dramatically collapses. It's okay, y'all. It's fine.
She's fine. This is a fucking Stine and you know what that means.
Every fucking chapter. Sigh.
Predictably, Trisha and her leather
Prada backpack are just fine. She's just had a psychic vision,
that's all. Trisha tells them that she foresaw the entire senior
class dying one by one. Josh and Debra don't believe her. They
point out the number of times her “visions” are wrong but Trisha
remains convinced that their class is doomed.
Josh changes the subject to her
upcoming party. Her parents are in Japan so.......um, excuse me
while I pause real quick to do this one thing............
Send the parent of a protagonist off on
a trip early in the book? Check.
Anyway, her parents are in Japan so
she's poised to throw the first party of the summer. And since she's
rich and lives in an enormous house, anticipation is high. But
Trisha tells them that she has to cancel the party because she
doesn't want anyone to die.
You see, a few days ago, she had a
different premonition. She saw a girl sprawled on the floor of her
party and she took it as a warning. Josh is irritated. He needs
this party. He reassures Trisha that it was a dream or something
stress related and everything will be fine.
Which pretty much guarantees that it
won't be.
After dropping Debra off at home, Josh
heads over to Mickey's house where Matty is also hanging around.
Josh tells us that he and Mickey mostly let Matty hang around because
they feel sorry for him. They don't really like him much and think
he's a big fat loser.
Stine writes excruciatingly unlikable
protagonists.
Josh brings up Clark and tells them
about finding him with Debra earlier. He mentions how pale and tired
Debra has been lately and Matty jokes that maybe Clark is drinking
her blood. Mickey grows serious at this point and says that Josh has
figured it all out. He wonders what other deepest, darkest secrets
Josh has discovered. Josh is completely confused. Suddenly the
chapter ends so Mickey pounces on Josh and bites his neck.
These things are so stupid.
Josh screams and then Mickey and Matty
have a good laugh at his expense, teasing him for believing in
vampires. Josh tries to man it off, posturing and beating his chest
a bit to reclaim his manliness. It doesn't work and he ends up
fleeing the house to escape their taunts. As he drives home, he
reassures himself that he doesn't believe in vampires and that he has
big balls but it doesn't sound all that convincing.
The phone is ringing when he comes in
the door and Stine has given us his mandatory creepy phone call early
in the book. Good jobber, Stine. I hate having to wait around for
these things.
Character receives a creepy anonymous call? Check.
The creepy, raspy voice on the other
end tells him that Debra is his now and if Josh tries to stop him,
he'll drain Josh of all his blood.
That ends Part One. Part Two has us
with a new host – Josie.
If you'll remember, Josie is mega
pissed at her trig teacher for giving her a D despite her extra
credit and extra projects to bring her grade up. She's determined to
confront him about it but she stops off in the bathroom first to
brush her hair and put on fresh lip gloss. Um. Josie, honey,
exactly how are you planning to convince him to change your
grade? I'm a little scared here, y'all. Hold me.
When she finally goes to the classroom,
she runs into Clarissa who is making her exit. Clarissa is angry and
tells Josie that the teacher is a dick essentially. Josie deduces
that Clarissa also got a bad grade but Clarissa never really confirms
that she's there to talk about a grade. She just stomps off. Josie
steels herself for battle and goes in.
The teacher doesn't seem surprised to
see her. She begins her case by mentioning that she had the flu
during their final exam and should get sympathy points of some kind.
He points out that Marla also had the flu and she still got an A.
This makes Josie hate Marla even more than she already did. Then she
brings up the extra credit but he tells her that it wasn't enough to
save her and it's too bad she's not good at math like her brother.
Josie sees red. She picks up a vase
and begins to smash it over the teacher's head until he's a pulpy,
bloody mess.
LOLZ
Oh, Stine, you tricky pickle.
The next chapter begins with her
realizing she just fantasized about killing him and then she runs
off. Outside the school she is joined by Jennifer and Deidre. Josie
takes a minute to tell us that Jessica and Elizabeth might look
identical but they're really very different. Jessica is a social
butterfly and Elizabeth is more reserved and......what's that?.....I
have the wrong book you say?.......sorry about that. I guess I just
got confused for a minute there. Anyway, Dana is our Jessica
Wakefield and Deidre is our Elizabeth.
I hope you've all read Sweet Valley
High or that's going to be super confusing. Oh, well. GOOGLE IT!
We now spend several pages getting a
history of Fear Street and the Fear family which Jennifer is a member
of. The family is said to be involved with lots of occult and
paranormal things and weird things have always been associated with
the street and the woods. Stine bought his house and his car off of
Fear Street money so you probably know all this stuff already and I can
just skip it.
They go over to Jennifer's house which
is huge and old and dark. Jennifer shows them into a room that was
once used as a chapel. There's also a ballroom and who knows what
else. Jennifer leaves them in the hall to go get sodas for everyone
and the other two girls explore a tiny bit. There's one door in the
hallway that's painted black and it has a crystal-like glass
doorknob. Josie is about to open it when Jennifer realizes it's the
end of the chapter so she comes running back into the hallway
screaming at them not to open the door.
Every. Single. Chapter. Ends. With.
Someone. Screaming. Or gasping. Or dying.
This. Is. Hell.
The room turns out to be a library.
Jennifer tries to usher them away from it, telling them that the room
is never used but they go in anyway. It is filled with lots of books about witchcraft and
the dark arts. Josie pulls a book off the shelf that is simply
called 'The Spell Book'. She opens it up and turns right to the page
with the Doom Spell.
Josie tells them what she's found and
Deidre immediately suggests that they use the spell on the trig
teacher. Jennifer is reluctant but when Deidre points out that it
shouldn't matter to her if they cast the spell since she doesn't
believe in things like that anyway, Jennifer relents and agrees to
take part in the ritual. It calls for six black candles which Deidre
conveniently finds on the shelf. They're all to picture him in their
heads and repeat the words in the book. I'm not going to quote the
words here. Yes, I know it's fake magic but I have respect and don't
want to release anything negative into the world.
The room gets cold and the candles
start to flicker in a sudden wind. They're all terrified when they
see a figure approach them but since it's the end of the chapter I
know it's not going to turn out to be anything actually sinister.
It's just Jennifer's mom. She's not
happy to see the girls casting. She tells them that the spells in
the book can be dangerous and shouldn't be treated like a game. Then
she asks Jennifer to help her get something down from a high shelf.
A minute later, Jennifer calls out from the kitchen that Deidre's mom
is on the phone so Deidre leaves the room too. Josie is all alone.
Josie tells us that she really felt
like the spell was working before they got interrupted. She could
feel the power in the room. She decides to finish the spell but this
time she pictures the teacher and Marla in her head as she
says the words. When she finishes, a cloaked figure seems to rise
out of the darkness. And it's not the end of the chapter either
so....uh oh. It hovers over her and then pulls back the hood to
reveal a skull with snakes crawling out of the eye sockets. A bony
hand reaches out and closes around her throat and she hears an
unearthly laugh. The chapter ends as Josie prepares to die.
But she doesn't. Instead, Jennifer
finds her passed out on the floor. Josie worries that this is her
second hallucination in 54 pages. She thinks she needs to pace
herself better. Still, she feels really cold and feels like she
probably unleashed something horrible.
That ends Part Two. Part Three puts us
back with Josh. We've done far less head-hopping than I expected
which is about the only positive thing I can say about this book so
far.
Josh is getting ready to back his car
out of the driveway with Mickey as a passenger when Josie appears.
She says it's her turn to use the car but Josh basically tells her
tough tits. She asks him where they're going and he says the mall so
she just gets in the backseat. Despite dating Dana, Mickey begins to
flirt with her but it feels kind of sarcastic like he's making fun of
her instead.
Josie needs to go to the mall to find a
summer job. She had one lined up at Marla's dad's athletic store
but then Marla decided she wanted to work there so Josie was let go
before she even began. I'm not sure if this is where her hatred for
Marla came from or if it just fed the fire. Once they get to the
mall the first person they run into is...............Marla! She and
Josie exchange barbed remarks for a page and it's all really boring
and then she leaves.
Josie peels off to look for a job –
or stalk and kill Marla – and Josh goes into a music store. In the
back of the store he sees Debra and Clark together again. Mickey
proposes the idea of vampire mind-control but Josh tells him to shut
up. He strides to the back of the store causing Debra and Clark to
jump apart. Clark drops the CD he was holding and Debra instantly
turns pink. She says they just ran into each other because they were
coincidentally looking for the same CD. Josh doesn't buy this for a
second. He accuses Clark of making the creepy phone call to him earlier
which Clark denies.
Clark leaves and Josh asks Debra what's
going on. She replies that she just feels “drawn” to Clark and
that she feels sorry for him. Josh doesn't get that at all. He
notices a red dot on her neck and freaks out about it despite the
fact that he keeps telling himself that he doesn't believe in
vampires. Debra tells him that it's a mosquito bite but he isn't
sure he buys it. He tries to forbid her from seeing Clark and she
tells him that he was no right to try to tell her who she can talk
to.
Go, Debra!
She stomps away angrily. Josh is so
bummed out that he decides to just leave and go home. So fuck Mickey
and Josie I guess since now they don't have a ride and they're
trapped at the mall. Not long after he gets home, his phone rings
and it's another creepy call. The voice on the other end says that
he's thirsty and he's coming to drain Josh now. Josh puts on his
brave pants and heckles the caller a bit before he hangs up. But
then the chapter ends so he gasps as he sees a dark figure on his
front porch.
Part Four and we're hosted by Josie
again so I guess we don't get to know who it was at Josh's door.
It's Saturday morning now and Josie is
feeling down. Her job search the day before resulted in nothing.
All the summer jobs had been filled weeks ago. Clarissa calls and
asks Josie to meet her at the school to help her bring her final art class sculpture
home. Josie is thrilled to have an excuse not to do any more job
hunting for an hour or so. She goes downstairs and finds Josh eating
cereal at the table. She asks what Clark was doing at their house
the previous evening (so I guess that's who was at the door) and Josh
tells her Clark borrowed a sleeping bag ages and he was returning it.
What?
First, I call bullshit. Josh hates Clark.
There's no way he lent Clark a sleeping bag. Do better, Stine.
Second, Josie wasn't even home when Josh saw the dark figure on their porch. She was still trapped at the mall which means she couldn't have known Clark was even there.
Josie makes it to the school before
Clarissa. She's trying to figure out which door is unlocked when she
sees the Trig teacher leaving the parking lot. He pauses to wave at
her and then drives directly into the path of a large truck. Josie
watches in horror as his car slams into a brick wall. It's the end
of the chapter, though, so I don't know if it really happened or not.
It happened. Josie is horrified. She
feels like a murderer because of the spell she cast at Jennifer's
house. Somehow she makes it home and she confesses everything to
Josh. He just laughs at her and asks her if she can cast a doom
spell on Clark.
Josie runs over to Jennifer's house.
Deidre is already there and they've heard about the accident. Josie
admits that she finished casting the spell after they left the room.
Jennifer tells her that it doesn't matter because those spells aren't
real but Josie isn't consoled. Josie tries to call Marla to warn her
but Marla won't listen.
We're suddenly back in Josh's head even
though we haven't changed parts. I guess Stine's abandoning his 'one
voice per part' rule that he's been following for half the book.
Josh is waiting outside a movie theater for Debra and she's 20
minutes late. He waits a little bit longer and then goes to the pay
phone to call her house. There's no answer. He drives over to her
house just in case but it's dark and empty. He goes back to the
theater but she still hasn't arrived so he follows a hunch and drives
to Clark's house. Sure enough, Debra's car is in the driveway.
Josh creeps up to the house and peers
into the window like some kind of stalker. He sees Debra on the
couch with her head tipped back and the chapter is ending so he gasps
in horror as Clark leans over her and starts drinking her blood.
LOLZ
Actually Clark kissed her and she
kissed him back. Josh stumbles back to his car. He's almost 100%
sure now that Clark must be a vampire using mind control on Debra
because what other explanation could there possibly be? There was no
way that Debra simply likes Clark better than him. It isn't possible.
Josh leaves and goes to Mickey's house
where Mickey and Matty are playing video games. He tells them what
happened and asks if they think it's possible Clark has some kind of
supernatural powers. Mickey suggests they go back to Clark's house
so they can break in and search the place. Josh decides this is a
rum idea so they head over there.
Clark and Debra are gone so they find
an open window and let themselves in. Josh leads the way to Clark's
bedroom because he somehow, mysteriously knows which one it is. I
call bullshit again but whatever. On the foot of Clark's bed they
find a black cape and some vampire books. There's also a pile of
dirt on Clark's sheets and Mickey reminds them about vampires having to
sleep in their native dirt. Wow, Stine's going full-on Dracula here.
Suddenly they hear the front door open
and close and footsteps start up the stairs. They dive out the
window, slide down the roof and land on the ground below. As they
run away, Josh glances back and thinks he sees Clark at the window
watching them.
Josh goes home after warning the others
to be sure to sleep with their windows closed. As soon as he's home,
his phone starts to ring. He's determined not to answer it but he
can't hold out and he picks it up. It's Trisha. She tells Josh the
party is definitely still on and she has some huge surprises planned.
That's pretty much it. I'm not sure why this was important.
After Trisha's call, the phone rings
again. This time it's Debra and she's pissed. She says she saw Josh
peeping at her through Clark's window and he has no right to follow
her around and spy on her. She's right but she's on shaky moral
ground here. After all, she's totally cheating on Josh. He tries to
point this out and she just tells him she thinks he needs help for
his voyeurism problem. Josh is furious and hangs up the phone. As
soon as he does, it rings again and his mystery caller asks him if he
liked the cape. The caller says it's going to be wrapped around
Josh's throat soon.
We're back with Josie now. She's
waiting to interview for a job as an intern in a law office. She's
ushered into an office to wait and while in there, she thinks she
sees the hooded skeletal figure behind the drapes. She runs
screaming from the building.
Now we're back with Josh on his way to
Trisha's party. He isn't sure he wants to be there, afraid he'll run
into Debra and Clark together. The allure of the party is too great
to resist, though, and he ends up going. When he gets there, the
party is in full swing. Trisha's house is massive (her backyard is
the size of a football stadium) and the sound system is top notch.
The music is really pulsing. As he comes around the side of the
house he sees Mickey arguing with a tall red-headed girl. He can't
hear what's being said over the music but it looks bad. The girl
pushes Mickey into the wall of the guest house and, to Josh's
surprise, Mickey pushes her back. The girl raises her fists and Josh
decides it's time to step in. Before he can get more than a step in
their direction, however, Phoebe stops him.
Phoebe wants to mutually celebrate over
the fact they're seniors now. Josh pauses to be polite and when he
looks back up, Mickey and the girl are gone. He doesn't even know
who she was. He and Phoebe talk about the fact that she won head
cheerleader over Jade and Dana for a few minutes. They apparently
aren't too happy about this.
Josh finally gets himself extricated
from the conversation and goes in search of his host. He finds her
dancing with Gary and he's surprised because Gary is dating Mary as
far as Josh knows. He's up on the upper terrace now somehow (teleportation???) when he
runs into the red-headed girl he saw with Mickey earlier in the
evening. She asks if his name is Josh and he says it is. She tells
him he's not on her good list and then she shoves him over the side
of the terrace.
LOLZ
Sigh.
She doesn't, of course. It's just the
end of the damn chapter. She tells Josh she saw him watching her and
Mickey earlier. Josh thinks she's model pretty and asks her what she and Mickey were fighting about. She says she doesn't remember and
then flirts with Josh a bit. He finally learns her name is Saralynn
and she doesn't even go to their school. He can't get her to tell
him much about herself but he doesn't much care. He thinks he can
maybe use Saralynn to make Debra jealous.
Finally
the inevitable happens and he sees Debra and Clark. She looks really
happy and they're holding hands. He turns to Saralynn and is
surprised to see she's disappeared. A few seconds later he hears a
gunshot and a bunch of girls scream.
LOLZ
It's
actually thunder and it begins to rain. Everyone runs inside and
Trisha herds everyone into one large room. She tells them that the
atmosphere is perfect to play the murder game she and Jennifer have
planned. Everyone is supposed to come up and get their cards to see
what their role is. Marla finds out she's the victim.
Odds
that Marla's days are numbered: 50%
Josh
and Phoebe find out they are investigators and a bunch of people are
suspects. Trisha realizes that she has one card left and asks if
anyone has seen Mickey. Suddenly the doors fly open, lightning
flashes and Mickey appears soaking wet and covered in blood. He says
he bumped into something outside and he has three long scratches on
his cheek. Josh thinks they look like fingernail marks and he
wonders again where Saralynn went.
Trisha
tells the suspects and Marla to go into the library and close the
door. Once in there, they have to pick who the murderer is and come
up with a story, motive and clues. While they're in there, Josh,
Phoebe and a few other non-suspects wander around and eat food.
The
chapter is ending and Josie starts screaming for help in the library.
They all rush in to find Marla dead on the floor.
Maybe.
Well,
it's a new chapter and she still seems to be dead. Trisha gets
hysterical and starts screaming that this is what happened in her
vision. Questions start flying. Mickey admits that he was voted to
be the murderer and his plan was to strange Marla. They left her
laying on the rug – perfectly fine and complaining – and then went into an adjoining room to work on the
story and clues. Marla was alone in the room at that point.
Josie,
naturally, blurts out that she killed Marla and the trig teacher with
her doom spell. Trisha gets even more hysterical at this point and
insists that they have to stuff Marla in the closet. It's a weird
reaction and it's making me wonder if this is all some kind of joke
because why would she want to stuff a dead body in a closet?
Josh
wants to call the police but the line is dead. They all blame the
storm. They remember Trisha has a cell phone and Josh volunteers to
go get it but she seems to quickly recover and she goes to get it
herself. Hmmmm. That's mighty suspicious. Sure enough, she comes
back claiming that it's missing and she must have left it in the car
that her parents took on their trip out of town.
You know....because people drive to Japan all the time.
Mickey suggests they just make a run for it but when they get down to the
gate, it's been chained shut.
Back
in the house, Josh notices that Clark is missing. Debra suddenly
asks if anyone has seen him and no one can remember the last time
they have. They decide they have to do something with Marla –
cover her or something – but when they go back to the library, the
body is gone.
Odds
that Marla is really dead: 20%
They
all look around and realize Mickey is dry. This means he didn't go
out to escape like the rest of them even though he's the one that
suggested they do that. He's accused of moving the body and then
accused of murdering Marla. He denies everything.
One
of them – and I don't even know which one at this point because
there's too many fucking character in this book, Stine – sees a
streak of blood on the closet door. They open it up and Saralynn's
body comes falling out. She has blood on her neck. Of course, half
the party saw her fighting with Mickey earlier and he's accused of
her death too. He denies at first but then starts screaming that he
killed them both. He screams that he can't stop himself and he's
going to kill again. Several kids grab and restrain him as he
continues to shout.
Mickey
fights his way free, still chanting “kill again, kill again” over
and over like some kind of parody. Josh tackles him and the two of them scuffle. Mickey gets
the upper hand and then bursts out laughing. Turns out it's all been
a set up. Saralynn sits up and Marla reappears from wherever she's
been hiding. Trisha orchestrated the entire thing.
People
are upset and pissed but they get over it pretty quickly. Marla
isn't too happy to hear that Josie tried to cast a doom spell on her.
Everything is calming back down when the chapter ends so Clark comes
sweeping in the room wearing his cape and pointy vampire teeth. Josh
feels vindicated for a paragraph or two. Then it's revealed that
Clark's in on it too and all the things Josh discovered in his
bedroom were planted. It was
Mickey's idea to go there after all.
We
jump into Josie's head in the middle of the chapter which is just
inexcusable. She locks herself in the bathroom to have a good cry.
She can't believe she admitted to everyone that she tried to cast a
spell on Marla. She considers running from the party because she's
so embarrassed but decides to stick it out and live with her choices.
Everyone
is back out in the living room or whatever when the french doors
burst open and a red-hooded figure comes into the room. Everyone
assumes it's another prank but Josie recognizes it as the evil spirit
she unleashed. The rest of the chapter is a complete blood bath as
the hooded figure kills everyone but Josie in a very violent manner.
I'll spare the gory details for the sake of my manager but it's
pretty slasher-movie worthy. When it's done, it stands in front of
Josie like it's waiting for praise and tells her that she summoned
it.
Josie
runs from the party and gets in her car. She drives straight to
Jennifer's house and knocks on the door. When Mrs Fear answers,
Josie tells her that Jennifer asked her to come by to grab some CDs
for the party. Mrs Fear lets her in. Josie goes to the library to
find the spell book. She can't find an antidote for the doom spell
but she does find a spell to turn back time one hour. She performs
the spell and then she's back in Trisha's bathroom again.
What
am I reading? I'm mean seriously. This is cheating, Stine.
Josie
doesn't do anything to change things. She doesn't warn everyone.
She doesn't evacuate the house. She doesn't even lock the french
doors. Apparently the theory here is that since she reversed time,
it also reversed what happened. EXCEPT everything else that happened
prior to the arrival of the evil thing still happens exactly as it
did the first time. Which implies that everything else will happen
as it did the first time.
But
it doesn't.
Because
Stine's a fucking cheater.
Josie
knows the evil thing is still out there, though, and that her class
is probably doomed.
The
book ends with Josh finding a package of vampire fangs on the floor.
He asks Trisha about them and she says they're the ones she bought
Clark. But if the fangs are here, what is Clark wearing, Josh wants
to know. He's more convinced than ever that Clark is a real vampire.
That
ends book one. I swear, this was the Stine-est Stine I've ever read
in my life. Holy fuck, that was a lot of cliffhangers.
So the plan is to read this series on the months that I get done with my three contracted recaps early. We'll see how long it takes us to get through 12 of them. It took me a year to get through 3 of the Pikes, so I figured I'll be done in 2023 or so. 😃
