From the Back of the Book: And then you die! Christina shudders. The grim message is scrawled across the script of the horror film in which she stars. Is this someone's idea of a joke? Tomorrow Christina is playing the death scene. Tomorrow you die! Jagged letters of blood scream from the face of the mirror in Christina's dressing room. Someone has been here. Someone with a sick sense of humor. Tomorrow has come... Death happens in a split second, missing it's mark but leaving Christina to witness bloody murder. The killer is within striking distance...unseen...unknown. But the message is serious. Deadly serious. Today you die!
This book was published in 1993 and this is my first time reading it. It's not my first time reading Davidson though. I've got a few of hers up on the blog somewhere. I can't remember if I liked them or not. I do know that I started doing the whole “odds” thing during one of her books and it stuck so there's that. I like the cover. It's good, campy fun.
We begin with our protagonist Christina and her “girlfriend” Randi watching a horror movie at the theater. I have a feeling girlfriend is being used in a platonic way here because it was 1993 and there wasn't much gay representation in these books back then but I guess we'll see where it goes. Christina is deeply into the flick, picturing herself on the screen instead of the heroine.
The movie freaks Christina out to the point where she doesn't think she's going to sleep for the next week. Randi asks why she even wanted to watch it since she's such a wienie and Christina says the director is going to be making a film in their area soon. She hopes to get a part so she wanted to check out some of his other work. They talk a little about who might be in the movie (some guy named Kurt who is ever so dreamy) and then talk shifts to Randi's weight for no fucking reason at all. Apparently Gale is also in this book.
Sigh.
Luckily Christina doesn't know Gale. She tells us that she's very genetically gifted. She's been a model since she was young but now she wants to add acting to her resume. She's very critical of Kurt's acting and feels like she would do much better if given the opportunity. To make sure we know how amazing she is, Christina runs down her resume for us. She's been in lots of local things, the Sears Wish Book, Vogue, Cosmo and on the cover of Seventeen. She's done international shoots and starred in commercials. It's clear she's pretty impressed with herself and expects us to be impressed too.
She's hella irritating, yo.
The next day Christina goes to the audition for Dreising's new movie Dark Memories. There are hundreds of people there but she recognizes a familiar face. Beryl is someone who is also on the acting circuit and she has a very annoying stage mother with her. Beryl seems nice, though, and Christina is happy to see her.
Beryl goes into her audition and emerges feeling confident. She tells her mother that Dreising said they'd be calling her. She takes that as a sign she got the part. I have no idea if she and Christina are auditioning for the same part or not or how many parts are being cast. Christina goes in for her audition and doesn't feel like she impressed them with her line reading. She offers to do a monologue from The Breakfast Club and, for some reason, they let her. She does better on that and Dreising says they'll be in touch.
Chapter two lands us in the head of some guy named Steve. He's at a wrestling match and he tells us, quite humbly, that's he's amazing and everyone loves him and he never loses. This guy has a very healthy self-esteem. He wins his match and scans the crowd looking for “her”. Whoever 'she' is, she isn't there and he's disappointed. He takes a long, slow shower allowing everyone else to leave and then goes to his locker. Inside he has a ton of pictures of Christina taped up. He says that his friends think he's obsessed but he just “likes her a lot”.
Feeling a little nervous about Steve.....
Christina ends up being called back to read again the next day. After she does, the assistant Amanda pulls her aside and asks her if she has a boyfriend and if she'll feel comfortable working closely with Kurt. I'm sorry, but why would it matter if she had a boyfriend? This seems creepy to me.
Feeling a little nervous about Amanda.....
And Kurt......
And probably Dreising.....
None of these people seem like good people.
Beryl and a girl named Jennifer end up getting parts as extras. Beryl's brother John gets hired as a PA and Christina gets the lead. Somehow. They're all going to miss at least a month of school to work on the movie.
Also, we already have too many characters, Davidson. You don't need to add anymore.
Over lunch, Christina and Randi talk about Christina's lack of a love life. She says that her manager is always booking her for things on the weekend which doesn't give her any opportunities to socialize and she refuses to date an actor or a model because she doesn't want to mix business with pleasure. I think she just doesn't want to share the spotlight with anyone but whatevs. Randi asks her what happened with John because the two of them used to date. Christina says that John was really good at sports but she's hopelessly clumsy so she felt awkward around him. That seems like a really lame reason to break up with someone but whatever. They also mention a boy named Kevin that Christina briefly dated in middle school. I wouldn't bother adding him but he might end up being important later.

Steve, of course, was sitting nearby listening. He's heartbroken to hear that Christina doesn't want to date someone into sports since he's a wrestling champion. He tells us that he asked her out months ago but she had to work and he'd almost worked up the nerve to do it again when he heard her say she wouldn't date a jock. He's upset and feels that it's unfair of her to dismiss a guy based on that.
He's not wrong.
He still makes me nervous though.
We skip ahead to Christina's first day on set. She reports to Amanda and is given a bunch of forms to fill out. Kurt is also there and gives Christina a very thorough once-over. He invites her to come to his trailer to go over some lines but Amanda steps in and warns him that this is Christina's first film. Kurt seems to like the idea that she's a “virgin” and I'm getting major douche vibes off him. Amanda tells him to go to wardrobe and for a minute it looks like he's going to fly into a rage. He doesn't. He tells Christina to watch out for Amanda because she likes to listen in on phone calls and read other people's mail.
Davidson practically put a neon sign up that said: "This will be important later. Did you pay attention? Did you?!?!?!?!?!?!?"
Later that afternoon she runs into John. They have a brief conversation about him saving up for college because his mom can't afford to send him. Christina worries about him working so hard and having to be the “man of the house” since his dad left them. She thinks he takes care of everyone but himself. So far, John is the only character that I haven't immediately disliked. That probably means he's the bad guy.
Dreising shows up and quizzes Christina about the movie to make sure she understands her role. It starts in the late 1800s with some guy who thinks his wife is cheating on him so he kills her. He's put to death but swears vengeance. A hundred years later, Christina shows up as a newlywed with her husband who is a med student. The ghost/zombie kills her and her husband brings her back to life with an experimental drug. She doesn't have a soul, though, so she ends up living with the ghost/zombie guy instead.
It sounds hella dumb y'all. How are they ghosts and zombies at the same time???
Christina admits to Dreising that she hates horror movies and it amuses him. He tells her he likes being able to decide who lives and who dies. But....that's the screenwriter. Dreising is the director. He doesn't actually write the scripts.
Sigh.
A week passes. Christina comes home exhausted and hungry but a message on the machine tells her that neither her mom nor her dad will be home for dinner and she's supposed to fend for herself. There's also a message from our bad guy. He calls her “Chrissy baby” and says he's been watching her. He warns her that her performance had better be perfect or something terrible will happen. Then he calls himself her “greatest fan” and hangs up.
Character receives a creepy, anonymous call? Check.
Protagonist has parents who are never home because of work? Check
Christina calls Randi over and plays the message for her. Randi is creeped out and suggests Christina call the police but Christina knows what kind of book she's in and refuses because it seems “too drastic”.
I could call this out as the 'main character refusing to call the police' trope, but honestly I probably wouldn't call them for a prank call either. It wasn't even very threatening.

Why do I suspect Amanda more than anyone else? I don't know. I just think it would be a cool book if the director's assistant was trying to kill off the cast.
I don't think that's the book we're getting, though.
We skip ahead to the first day of filming. Christina and Kurt are filming the scene where they drive up to the castle which has been converted into a B&B. He repeatedly puts his hand on her knee despite the fact that it's out of camera range and there's no reason for him to be touching her. She tells him to cut it out and he tells her to stop taking things so seriously.
Really hate Kurt.
Christina tells him again that she doesn't want him to touch her in this scene and he tries to flirt his way out of it by asking her to dinner. When she refuses on the grounds that she has homework, he asks her to come to his hotel later that night instead. She refuses that as well and makes it clear that she doesn't want any kind of relationship with him outside of filming. He doesn't take it well.
During the afternoon filming, Kurt childishly ruins several takes and does his best to make Christina look bad. Dreising finally comes over to yell at both of them. He threatens to replace them if they don't shape up and Kurt acts like he doesn't care but it's clear he needs the job. Miserable, Christina goes back to her trailer and immediately notices several things out of place. Someone has clearly been moving things around and they've left a can of cola on her table. On the page of the script where her character dies, she finds “And then you die!” scrawled in red marker. It freaks her out and she runs off.
This bad guy really sucks at being threatening. Honestly, that just seems like a fact and not a threat at all.
John calls that evening to check on her. She tells him that she's not looking forward to the kissing scenes the next day and he tells her to picture someone else when she's kissing Kurt. For some reason she decides to go through her yearbook and pick out a boy to picture. This is weird. She ends up coming across a picture of Steve and decides to envision him when she kisses Kurt.
Why is this in here? It's so dumb.
We hop back into Steve's head. He gets up super early on Saturday to get to the park where he knows Christina will be shooting. He's hoping to hide out in the bushes and watch without being seen by the crew. He takes a camera with him to get some pictures. When he gets there, he thinks about Christina doing the scene with Kurt and he's so jealous, he punches a tree. Then he vows to get her attention one way or another.
Still not feeling good about Steve.
Back with Christina. She's dreading the kissing scene but determined to pretend that Kurt is Steve. You know, because that makes perfect sense and isn't just jammed in here with no background or anything. Kurt shows up late and is annoying but Christina does her job. She's so into pretending that he's Steve during the kiss that she doesn't even notice that he's completely unbuttoned her shirt, which was NOT in the script and something she hadn't consented to. When she realizes what he's done, she gets mad and calls him a pervert. The director calls 'cut' but the camera guy says they got what they needed and they don't have to do it again. Kurt pulls her close and tells her that he's going to get her back for humiliating him. I'm sure we're supposed to find it menacing.

I still have nothing to base this Amanda thing on other than a vague hope.
I feel like Steve and Kurt are being made too obvious. It could be Dreising trying to get an “authentic” performance out of her. That feels plausible.
At the end of the day, Christina runs into Beryl. Beryl is pissed because they've dressed her up as the school “slut” (Davidson's word, not mine) and everyone she knows is going to see her like this. Christina tells her to hang in there and that her day will come. Beryl bitterly says that her mom says the same thing and makes it sound like her mom expects her big break to come soon. I guess we're supposed to be suspicious of her now too. Christina asks Beryl to go grab a hamburger with her since they're both done for the day but Beryl blows her off.
When Christina goes into her trailer, she finds the words “Tomorrow you die!” scrawled across her mirror in blood. Stupidly she decides to clean it up without showing anyone. This girl really needs to rent a brain from someone. She's in the middle of erasing it with some water and a rag when Steve shows up at her trailer door. He gives her some stupid story about jogging earlier in the day and losing his watch and I'm not sure whether she buys it or not but she invites him in and then reviews the entire book for him. At least the parts he wasn't in.
Steve admonishes her for not calling the police because he has no idea what book he's in and then goes to investigate the 'blood' on the mirror. It turns out it's the fake stuff the FX department uses. Steve ends up driving her home because she's so distraught and arranges to pick her back up in the morning at 5:30 to take her back to the lot. She doesn't seem to think it's weird that he's volunteering to get up that early on a Sunday.
When she tells her parents what happened, her dad insists they call the police. They arrive and Christina tells them the entire story. They ask to see the evidence and she has to admit that she's erased or gotten rid of it all. They tell her that it's probably a publicity stunt to get the production in the papers long before the movie releases. It's heavily implied that they think Christina is faking everything for publicity but she suspects it might be someone else involved with the movie.
Like Kurt who needs it to be a success. Or Dreising for obvious reasons. Or Amanda because she's a sycophant. Or Beryl's mom who wants her daughter to have the lead role. Shrug.
The next morning, Steve shows up as promised to take Christina to set. She's nervous because of everything's that happened and nervous about shooting her death scene that day. Steve asks her if she wants him to hang around and keep an eye on her and she really likes the idea. She finds his athletic build very reassuring. She tells him that he'll have to pose as her boyfriend to get on set and he eagerly agrees to the plan.
We get a few paragraphs from the bad guy. They're not too pleased that their attempts to warn Christina away from the movie aren't working and have decided to step things up a bit. They're constructing some kind of letter bomb that will go off when Christina opens it.
I think we can eliminate Steve now. Davidson is definitely setting him up to be the hero and I don't think she's nuanced enough to pull off a twist like that. I think we can also eliminate Dreising. He wouldn't blow up his lead. That would cost him a TON of money in reshoots. He might fake stalk her for publicity but he wouldn't bomb her. I think that also cuts out Amanda. She's so far up Dreising's ass that she wouldn't harm his production in that way. That leaves us with Kurt, John and Beryl. Kurt needs this job or his career is toast so I doubt he'd fuck with the production that heavily. I'll leave him in but his odds are low I think. I still like Beryl best of who is left. She might think she'd get the lead if Christina was out of the picture. And John gets high odds simply because we know he has a past with Christina and he's around and we haven't eliminated him yet. I don't know his motive. A lover scorned maybe? Wants his sister to be successful? Working at the behest of his mom? I would put the mom on here but she doesn't have a reason to be on set and would definitely be noticed if she was lurking around leaving notes and stuff.

I feel like we shouldn't be able to narrow it down this far this early in the book. This does not bode well, y'all.
Christina gets to set super early the next day so she can go into makeup to get her zombie look done. She introduces Steve to Amanda who seems fine with him being on set. Steve heads for Christina's trailer to keep an eye on things while she's in makeup. When she's about halfway done, Steve joins her in the makeup trailer to keep her company. He ends up chatting with the makeup artist who has a son who wrestles as well. Steve plans to be a physical therapist to help athletes recover from injuries and Christina gets all swoony over how much Steve wants to help people.
Christina and Steve leave the makeup trailer when she's finished. They're kind of horsing around with each other when Dreising and Kurt rock up. Dreising isn't amused that she's risking the makeup getting ruined. He reminds her how much it will cost if they have to redo it and basically tells her to be more professional at work which is fair. He seems irritated that Steve is around so Steve explains he's there because Christina has been receiving threats. Dreising and Kurt kind of laugh off her uneasiness, saying it's just part of the business. She insists that someone is definitely probably going to murder her and Dreising agrees to let Steve stay, thinking he may keep Christina calm.
Christina does her big burial scene. Everything seems to be going well until they close the coffin and start to “bury” her. She quickly starts to run out of air and panics. No one can hear her and she thinks she's going to die. Meanwhile, Steve is watching. He thinks he can see the lid of the coffin moving as if Christina is desperately trying to get out. He tries to get Dreising's attention but the man ignores him. Finally he's freaked out enough to interrupt the scene and jump down into the grave to rescue Christina from the coffin. Dreising realizes that the air holes had not been drilled and asks who was responsible. The prop guy says he assigned one of the workers but can't remember which one.
We only know one of the workers. John.
Did we just get effing Justin-ed?
I mean, seriously. Davidson you could have made this less fucking obvious by having the holes there but covered up. Then it could have been anyone.
Sigh.
We're barely halfway through the book and it's almost 100% that it's John now. Grrrrr.
Steve gets thrown off the set for his interference even though he saved Christina's life. Christina hangs around her trailer for a bit to calm down and then goes to rejoin the cast and crew. She's walking across the lot when she sees Amanda delivering everyone's mail. When Amanda gets to Christina's trailer, she looks around, doesn't see Christina for some convenient reason, and then opens up Christina's mail to snoop. There's a huge explosion and I think she dies.
Like we didn't know that was going to happen since Davidson made sure to highlight the fact that Amanda snoops in other people's mail.
John and Beryl are both conveniently close when it happens. John stops Christina from running to Amanda to try to render aid, saying that Amanda is already dead. Christina knows that the letter bomb was intended for her. The cops show up and ask her a bunch of questions. They decide to investigate at the high school to see if they can find anyone who might want Christina dead. They come across Steve's locker full of pictures and decide he's the killer.
That was all such a reach, Davidson.
Sigh.
The cops seriously need to learn about effing Justin.
The cops go to Christina's house to tell her that Steve is the killer and he's obsessed with her. She doesn't want to believe them because “he's so nice” which is just the dumbest thing ever. Even though she's right in this case. They assign her a bodyguard and tell her to call them immediately if Steve shows up.
Seriously.
We spend a couple of paragraphs in Justin's.....I mean JOHN's head. Davidson tries to throw suspicion on both Beryl and her red herring of a mother in this section but it's poorly done. John is the only one on crew. A member of the crew was told to drill the holes but didn't so Christina would suffocate. It doesn't take a genius here.
Steve shows up in the tree outside of Christina's window in the middle of the night. She's scared at first but decides not to alert her father or bodyguard. She asks him if he's trying to kill her and he says no. I mean, he didn't but she shouldn't take his word for it. People rarely just straight out tell you that they're trying to kill you. She asks about the locker full of pictures and he says it's like a scrapbook because he loves her. I'm still not 100% fine with this but we know he isn't the bad guy so whatever. She doesn't return the sentiment out loud but she internally admits that she has some sort of feelings for him. She tells him to be careful and the conversation ends.
We skip to the next day on set. Christina is getting ready to film her big stabbing scene when Justin....I mean JOHN rocks up. He's acting all shady and hinting that he might know who the bad guy is. He advises her to give up her role and leave the movie. He successfully plants the idea into her head that the bad guy might be Beryl or her mom. I have to hand it to Justin – he knows how to work Christina.
I'm not sure that really takes any skill or talent though. She's not very bright.
Steve surprises her in her trailer after shooting wraps for the day. He tells her that he thinks the bad guy works on the set and they discuss how to catch him without coming to any kind of conclusion because they're both idiots. Steve asks if he can sleep in her trailer that evening and she agrees.
We get a few paragraphs from the bad guy.....I mean JOHN. He's waiting outside of Christina's house to kill her but gets thwarted when the bodyguard goes inside with her instead of sitting in the car outside of the house.
Pity, that.
Randi shows up at Christina's house and Christina reviews the last few chapters for us as if we hadn't just read them. Believe me, Davidson, we're perfectly able to keep up. Randi seems far more inclined to believe that Steve might be behind it but Christina manages to more or less convince her that he's innocent. They decide it must be someone else on set like we didn't already know that. I just read pages and pages of text that amounted to absolutely nothing. I didn't learn anything new and the plot didn't move forward at all. Thanks, Davidson.
We skip ahead to the next day. Christina finishes shooting some scenes and Dreising tells her that she can go hang out in her trailer for awhile because they're shooting background scenes all afternoon. She considers taking a nap because she hasn't been sleeping well and he tells her to go ahead – he'll send someone to wake her up if they need her later. If not, he'll see her tomorrow. Christina starts to head for her trailer when Mama Red Herring rocks up with a very embarrassed Beryl in tow.
Mama Red Herring calls Dreising “Mr Darling” and bats her eyes a bunch. She says the crew can't stop talking about how good Beryl looks on film and that she deserves a much bigger part in the movie. Dreising is instantly annoyed and tells Mama Red Herring that she needs to leave the set or Beryl will lose her part entirely. Christina tries to step in for some reason and that makes Mama Red Herring incredibly angry. She starts screaming that Christina must have paid Dreising to get the role and Dreising calls for security.
The bodyguard murmurs that they might have a new suspect and Christina remarks that she's just a “bad example of a stage mom”. Beryl overhears this and gets mad. She screams that Christina gets everything she wants, treats everyone badly and that she even dumped John when she got too famous for him. Christina is confused by this because she and John went on a few dates but it was never anything serious. She mentions to the bodyguard that they might want to look into Beryl and Mama Red Herring after all. He calls it in and they start the process of getting search warrant for their house.
She's ignoring the VERY OBVIOUS fact that John absolutely told Beryl that their relationship was deeper than it was because he's EFFING JUSTIN!
Christina takes a nap in her trailer and wakes up at 11:00pm. She calls out for her bodyguard but there's no answer so she decides the logical thing to do is leave the safety of her locked trailer to wander around in the dark and look for him.
She goes to the neighboring trailers but it seems like everyone has already left for the night. She walks through the empty set and then hears someone approaching her. John had told her days ago that the second floor of the “castle” they were shooting in had a maze of rooms and she decides that she can lose whoever is following her there. This girl is so hella dumb. We all know, in horror movies you NEVER go up to the second floor of anything. You get trapped up there. Stay on ground level.
Also, does she think it's a literal maze? Why does she think she can lose him on the second floor of a building?
Christina runs to the castle, panicking the entire way that she's going to get killed at any second. She makes it to the second floor where she runs into Steve. He's been hiding out up there for the last couple of days. He asks her what the hell she's doing running around without her bodyguard and she tells him that she woke up and everyone was gone.
They decide the only course of action is to go up another floor and hide out there. Christina points out that they were told the third level was dangerous due to rotting floors but Steve tells her there's no other option. He's clearly as dumb as she is. She twists her ankle going up the stairs because she's dramatic like that. They get up there and there's just a room with a messed up bed and rotting mattresses. Steve tells her to hide under it and he'll go lure the bad guy out of the building and then run to the security trailer to get help.
Seems like a great plan.
Steve enacts his part of the plan but it's never actually stated that Justin/John follows him. Steve runs to the security trailer to find it empty and the phone lines cut. He breaks into the makeup trailer to look for weapons because....reasons. Inside he finds a wall of pistols, swords, etc. Most are fake but he figures the guns shoot blanks at least. He grabs one, some shells and a bunch of other things he thinks he might be able to use as weapons and heads back to the castle.
He gets minor points for arming himself. MINOR.
Christina is still hanging out under the bed. Justin/John comes in because Steve's plan was stupid. He's wearing a mask from the movie but Christina can tell it's a man and it's not Dreising. He looks around a bit and acts like he's going to leave but then he comes back and upends the bed she's hiding under. She gets up and tries to limp away but he catches her. She knees him in the balls and takes off. TO GO FARTHER UP! The stupid bitch literally goes up into the turret where there's literally only one door that the bad guy can just stand in front of and then she's trapped.
Seriously. Girl needs to watch a few slashers. She is the most disappointing final girl ever.
Sure enough, the bad guy follows her up there. He has a script and a pen in his hand and she stupidly thinks that he's going to ask for her autograph before he kills her. He really just wants her to write a note framing Steve for her murder. She writes it out and then John takes off his mask. I guess we're supposed to be shocked here but Davidson made it completely obvious who the bad guy was halfway through the damn book.
John tells her that she's ruined his entire family. She's taken away Beryl's acting career, insulted his mother and dumped him. It's clear he thought they had more of a relationship than she thought they had. She explains that she just didn't have time for dating but that doesn't seem to make him feel better. He tells her that she's selfish and evil and she has to die. As far as bad guy speeches go, this one is very lame.
But he's 100% right about her character.
Steve appears with the gun. John laughs at him and lunges for Christina with the knife he's holding. Steve intercepts him and the two struggle. Somehow John gets the gun away from Steve and fires it into Steve's chest. Blood soaks through Steve's shirt and he crumbles to the ground. John is shocked that the prop gun somehow had real bullets in it because he's too stupid to realize that Steve probably taped a blood pack under his shirt to fool him. Steve obviously underestimated how much of a punch blanks have though because it seems to have temporarily taken him out of commission.
Good plan, Steve-O. 👍👍
Christina tries to get away but doesn't make it far because of her ankle. John tells her that he's going to push her down the stairs and then he'll tell the police that Steve stalked Christina up to the turret, she shot him in self defense and then she tripped running back down the stairs and fell to her death. I don't know how he's going to explain how he knows all this but no one in this stupid book ever thinks things through all the way. The cops aren't going to just take your word for it, John. They're going to want to know how you managed to see all this go down.
Christina steps out onto a balcony and it starts to fall apart. For some reason, instead of just waiting out the inevitable where the balcony crumbles and Christina falls to her death and saves him the trouble of killing her, John steps out there with her. God, he's dumb. The weight is too much and the balcony basically separates itself from the castle. Christina manages to grab onto some kind of metal framework but John falls to his death. Steve comes back and pulls her to safety.
We skip ahead to the wrap party for the movie. The book ends with Christina and Steve filling in Randi on what happened. John tried to kill her because she dumped him and because he thought Beryl might get the lead with Christina gone. I don't know why he thought this. Beryl wasn't her understudy or anything. Do they even have those for movies? Steve shows up with the gun and fake blood but doesn't count on getting knocked out by the shot. Christina almost dies but he rescues her. Blah, blah, blah. It never once explains what the fuck happened to Christina's bodyguard or the rest of the on-set security.
The movie is done, Christina is poised to be a huge star like she always wanted and Steve and Christina are going to live happily ever after. I mean, until they break up in college or something because there's no way the two of them are compatible enough to be together for long.
This book was disappointing. We knew who the bad guy was WAY too early and that made the rest of it stupid and boring. None of the characters were very likable, I'm still pretty sure that Steve is full of fairly significant red flags and I hate Christina so much that I don't even care if everything works out for her. That's not how you're supposed to feel about the protagonist at the end of the book, y'all.
