Warning: Spoilers Ahead!!! This is a recap blog which means I read the book and tell you everything that happens so you don't have to read it yourself. Do NOT continue to read unless you want to know who the bad guy/girl/effing Justin is.
Tag Line: Evil approaches...no one is safe. From the Back of the Book: "The demon is among us...leave before it's too late!" The old lady's voice shakes with fear as she speaks, and the eyes of her cat glow a savage green. But the ominous warning goes unheeded. The Archaeology (sic) Club from Fort Johnson High has come to the Florida Keys in search of sunken treasure and won't be scared off by the ravings of a crazy old woman. Now the horror begins... Members of the group are behaving strangely. Accidents are happening. The Evil is closing in - reaching out to destroy them...one by one.... He watches....and waits. "I'll get rid of them all," he snarls beneath his breath. With a grim smile he lowers himself beneath the dark waves. He is patient....
You ever just look at the cover of a
book and know you're going to hate it?
I haven't even read the blurb on the
back and I know I'm going to hate it.
How?
Nicole Davidson, that's how.
Nicole Davidson of the super racist and
annoying Crash Course book. Davidson who can't keep track of
her own settings or characters OR story.
Plus, they misspelled Archaeology.
Why does my manager hate me?
This book was published in 1992 and this is my first time reading it.
Davidson loves her bad-guy prologues
and this book isn't any different. This time we're in the Gulf of
Mexico and our bad guy is literally in the water watching a group of
teenagers dig for treasure. He vows to kill them all if he has to in
order to keep the treasure for himself.
Chapter one begins in the head of Max (who
has an uncanny talent for playing Trivial Pursuit) losing all
feeling in her hand while taking minutes for the Archaeology Club.
That sounds like carpal tunnel or a stroke to me and she should
probably have that checked out. By the way, I hate typing out the word
“archaeology” so from now on it will be the AC. Max is sick of
being the secretary for the AC and can't wait to ditch the job on
some incoming freshman next year.
The club is about to go on a two-month
field trip to the Florida Keys to dig buried treasure out of a sunken
Spanish ship. Mrs D's (faculty sponsor) mother lives
there and she's been finding coins and pottery washing up on her
beach so they're going down to dive for the rest of it.
Yeah, right.
Because THAT happens in real life. People take a group of high school kids to another state for two months so they can do dangerous things like deep sea diving and working with chemicals. That, dear readers, is what we call an insurance nightmare.
Oh, Davidson. It's so early in the
book but....... #bullshit.
In the span of one page we also meet Max's brother Rob
who is apparently a piano virtuoso, a nerdy boy named Wesley,
a complete bitch of a cheerleader named Barbara,
some random blonde chick that isn't given a name (Note
From Future Me: it's Lucy.
She's finally given a name three pages later.),
Brodey the school
brain who spells his name stupidly and Zelda the
treasurer who Davidson takes great pains to tell us is Chinese.
We're told that
Lucy has been involved with an older boy who took nude photos of her
and her mom is forcing her to go on the trip to get away from the
scandal.
#clutchmypearls
Barbara
is being a total dick to Wesley and this makes Max angry. To get
back at her, she intercepts a note Barbara is trying to pass to Lucy.
Max turns it over to the teacher who reads it aloud. It basically
says that Barbara will give Lucy a place on the Homecoming court the
next year if Lucy pays her for it. Everyone is disgusted and Barbara is
furious.
Odds
of Barbara being the bad guy: Ordinarily I would give this a 50%+
here but Davidson revealed the bad guy to be male
in the prologue so......0%. Way to ruin the suspense, Davidson.
We time hop and
now they're all in the plane on the way to Florida. Max notices Mrs
D seems pretty upset and assumes that the teacher fought with her
boyfriend about the trip. Seems like a big leap to make but whatevs. After the seatbelt light goes off, Barbara tells them all to come to
her seat. She has the job assignments for the summer that Mrs D
supposedly gave her. Brodey and Rob are going to handle all the
snorkeling. Wesley and Max will be recording all the findings. We
don't get to hear what everyone else will be doing. Apparently
Davidson stopped caring at that point so she didn't write it in.
I find it hard to care about things the author doesn't even care about. Just sayin'.
Max
notices that Brodey seems preoccupied during the flight. Maybe he's
contemplating the hideous spelling of his name. Nothing else happens
and the plane lands. Mrs D's niece Denise
and Denise's boyfriend Mitch
meet them at the airport to drive them to wherever they're staying.
Davidson makes sure to point out several times that Mitch is brown.
Max thinks he's probably Spanish. She also says that Denise isn't
very attractive but she's clearly trying to make herself “more
noticeable” by highlighting her hair blonde.
Is Davidson
completely incapable of writing likable characters?
In the grand
tradition of being gross, Davidson continually refers to Mitch as
“that Hispanic boy”. She lets us forget that Zelda is Chinese though. That's really unlike her.
Mitch isn't happy that the AC is there. He
and Mrs D get into a bit of a tiff over it in front of the others.
Mrs
D's mom, Mrs F, comes
out to greet them. She seems very happy that they're there. Mrs F
seems to hint that there's something odd about the beach. She says
she isn't sure it's a good idea for the kids to be working down there
but Mrs D cuts her off. Mrs D says there's an undertow but they'll
all be careful and it will be fine.
Odds of the
undertow being what Mrs F is worried about: 1%
Mrs D hands Brodey
the room assignments and then takes off to check out the work site.
We don't get to actually hear the room assignments. That would be
too much work for Davidson. All we know is the boys and girls are in
separate wings and the adults are in the middle.
Mrs D eventually
calls them down into the parlor and tells them that they have a free
evening. However they are confined to the house or the yard. They
aren't allowed to leave the grounds. No one is very happy about
that. Before the kids disperse, Mrs F says she wants to
tell them about the curse of White Key.
A
milionty-billionty years ago, a demon came to the area. He was a
minor assistant of Satan but he didn't want any trouble. He lived
alone for a long time but eventually people tried to settle in the
area. The demon would “enter
their minds” (Oh, God,
I just had a “migrate
their boundaries”
flashback. Hold me.) and drive them mad with jealousy and fear.
They murdered each other until one girl remained. She drowned
herself.
The demon sunk
ships and drove people away until one man and his new bride came to
the island. The man would not be driven away. He told the demon
that he would build his home on the east side of the island and let
the demon have the west side. For some reason the demon, who is
all-powerful up until this point, agrees to this bargain. He says if
they ever go to the west side they will be killed.
Mrs F tells them
that she and her husband were the bride and groom in the story and
they've never allowed their children to go to the west side of the
island for fear of incurring the demon's wrath.
Naturally the work
site is on the west side of the island. Max pretty much loses her
ish at this point and Rob makes fun of her for being such a baby.
Mrs D reassures them that it's only a legend and there's no truth to
it. Mrs F makes the parting shot that they're running the risk of
being driven insane and then goes to make dinner.
Okay then.
We finally hear
the room assignments. Max and Zelda are sharing a small room.
Barbara, Lucy and Denise are in a much bigger room. Brodey and
Wesley are roommates. Rob and Mitch are roommates. Well, that was
exciting.
Max thinks Zelda
is freaked out by the story but Zelda says that people are far
scarier than demons – and a lot more vicious to each other. Zelda
knows what's up, y'all.
We take our first
head hop and land in Wesley's skull. He's hot (there's no air conditioner apparently) and agonizing over whether to tell Max something. He
wonders if she'll still be safe if he never works up the nerve to
tell her. At about that point he thinks he's being strangled by a
black snake which turns out to be his bedsheet. He screams and
startles Brodey who has been reading. Brodey is really kind about
the entire thing and tries to make Wesley feel better by saying he
used to have night terrors about being chased by a monster. Wesley
finds the solidarity comforting.
We hop into
Zelda's head now. She's thinking about how groovy it is to have
friends. She was fat before and therefore friendless because fat
people aren't allowed to have friends ever. She's worked hard to be
thin enough to deserve friends and she's worried this trip will turn
her fat and friendless again.
I hate Davidson so
much.
We hop into
Denise's head now. She's sneaking out to meet Mitch in the woods.
She's worried he might be running drugs again. He has something besides drugs on
his mind though. Apparently he's the jealous type and he accuses her of
flirting with the other boys and then says he'll kill anyone who
touches her.
The next morning
they head down to the beach. Max somehow ends up putting sunblock on
Wesley and she can't believe what a nice body he has. He's all
chiseled and she wonders why he doesn't take his shirt off more in
school.
BECAUSE IT'S
FUCKING SCHOOL! This girl is SUPER dumb, y'all.
There's a lot of
boring stuff about the actual treasure hunting work that I really
don't care about. If you want to know exactly how they are
retrieving and cataloging artifacts, feel free to READ THE BOOK
YOURSELF.
Wesley asks Max if
she believes the stuff about the curse and she says she doesn't. He
replies that she should never forget what she's sure of and then he
walks away. She has no idea what he's talking about and worries that
he's developed a crush on her. Because that would be super awful, y'all. He's a nerd. {{Shudder}}
They work for
awhile and then break for lunch. Max is sunning herself on the sand
when she hears a fight break out. Mitch is accusing Brodey of
flirting with Denise. Brodey denies but Mitch begins to kick his ass
anyway. Probably because of the way he spells his name. Mrs D finally intervenes and tells Mitch he'll be kicked off
the island if he does this “one more time”. So clearly this is
an ongoing issue with him.
Sometime in the
afternoon a random guy named Adler rocks up. He says he's
“Key hopping” looking for odd jobs. He's really cute and Max
feels her heart pitter-patter when she looks at his yummy-surfer-boy
body. Mrs D offers him a job without even asking him any questions.
I'm sure that won't turn out to bite her in the ass or anything.
Odds of Adler
being who he says he is: 10%
Later in the day,
they notice that Brodey is gone. No one seems to know where he is.
Suddenly they hear a motorcycle revving across the sand. The man on
it is wearing swim trunks and a leather jacket. His hair is
slicked back and he's wearing a thick gold chain. Max is shocked to
see that it's Brodey. This isn't the Brodey she's known since grade
school. He drives the motorcycle right toward them and only swerves
at the last minute.
They try to talk
to him but he's rude and lewd and not acting like himself at all. He
offers Max a “ride” which she declines. He then offers to take
Lucy down the beach and she hops right on. The two of them roar
away.
Lucy doesn't
reappear until quitting time. She's sobbing and clearly upset. When
they question her she says that Brodey made unwanted advances on her.
Rob laughs. He says any girl who will let someone take nudes of her
can't complain when another guy tries to get a feel.
I can't even recap
what I just said to Rob in my head.
Lucy says the
nudes never happened and she'd never date anyone who wasn't a perfect
gentleman. Max thinks she's playing the part of a Southern Belle now
and can't figure out why.
Brodey reappears
for dinner still talking like a thug stereotype with a horrifically spelled name that Davidson saw on
TV once. He and Max are in the kitchen when Zelda suddenly bursts
in. She's shouting “I won't do it” at Lucy and Barbara. When
Max asks what's going on, Zelda stammers out some completely
unbelievable explanation about loaning the other girls money.
Graceful Barbara
has suddenly turned clumsy, nice-guy Brodey is suddenly an asshole,
Lucy is suddenly a prude. Wesley appears and he's turned into a
Cassonova. Gee. I wonder if everyone is being the opposite of who
they really are?
I hate this book
so much.
Adler later tells
Max that the locals don't dare go on the west beach of White Key
where they've all been working. This just sends her into another tail spin.
After work the
next day, Max talks Rob into playing the piano for the group. The
first song goes off without a hitch. Adler joins them to flirt with
Max a bit. Suddenly Rob starts missing notes. He gets frustrated
because it's a song he could play in his sleep. He loses his temper
and slams his hands down on the keys. Max thinks it's odd because he
never loses his temper at home.
I just had a total
Airplane flashback but my readers are all too young to get the
reference so I'll just be moving on.....
Adler talks Max
into taking a walk. He wants to walk down on the West Beach but she
balks. He tells her the curse isn't real as long as she doesn't
believe in it. Then he makes some crack about possibly being the
demon. It's something I've actually considered. Damn Davidson. If this were a Stine there would definitely NOT be a demon. If this were a Cooney there would definitely BE a demon. I don't know which way Davidson is leaning here.
Odds of Adler
being the demon: 50%
Odds of there even being a demon: 50%
Max mentions the
changes everyone is going through and Adler says he's changing as
well. He's falling madly in love. She says she is too.
Seriously?
You guys have
known each other for about 48 hours. Calm the fuck down.
Wesley decides to
host us in his brain for a bit. Thank heavens for small favors. I couldn't stand
another minute in Max's head. He's wearing Brodey's clothes and
feeling pretty spiffy. He can't believe how good he looks. Even
better, Lucy, Barbara and Denise are practically swooning at his
feet. He loves how that feels. He only wishes Max was one of the
swooners because he's madly in love with her.
After supper that
night they all gather on the patio. Max can feel a tension in the
air and pulls Rob aside to ask him about it. He Scullys her and says
it's all in her mind. They hear a commotion and head back to the
group to find Brodey taunting Barbara about how clumsy she's been.
He says she'll probably lose her gig as head cheerleader because she
can't even manage to stay on her feet anymore. Barbara says she'll
show him that she's still got it.
Barbara goes back
inside and then reappears on the ledge outside the girls' second
story window. No one but Max seems to want to stop her. Max runs
inside as Barbara climbs to the roof. She's terrified of heights but
she decides the best course of action is to follow Barbara up on the
roof. Barbara is doing cartwheels and walking the peak of the roof
like a balance beam. She says she's going to prove something about
Max which Max doesn't understand at all.
Adler and Wes
appear on the roof because all of them falling off and dying is
better than just Barbara. Max and Adler have the brilliant idea to
try to trap Barbara in between them but, before they can get into
place, she backflips right off the roof.
Luckily she's only
broken her leg. Mrs F attributes it to the curse and Mrs D yells at
her to shut up. They take Barbara to the hospital and then bring her
home sporting a huge cast. Brodey walks in and tells Barbara that
it's time for all this to stop. She yells at him to shut up and he
storms out of the house.
Dare I hope this
is all some kind of elaborate hoax?
Odds of there
being a demon: 25%
They all discuss
whether they should get the hell out and go home but decide to stay
because Davidson is only halfway through this crap book.
We get a bad-guy
chapter now because we haven't suffered enough. “He” is stealing
artifacts and handing them off to someone named Jerry. “He”
says that the bratty kids will be gone soon enough. Jerry asks if
the boat is scheduled and “He” replies that everything is going
according to plan. Then Jerry asks about the girl and “He”
replies that he'll take care of her.
Odds of Mitch
being the bad guy: 60%
Odds of Adler
being the bad guy: 40%
I'm not really
feeling the others right now but we'll see how I feel in a bit.
We land in
Brodey's head for a bit. He's feeling guilty about not telling Mrs D
what he saw in the cave. He's too afraid to cross Barbara who is
blackmailing him. You see, Brodey is a hacker. A super amazing
hacker who completely crashed the state government's website causing
mass chaos, a complete shut down of the entire government and traffic
lights everywhere to stop working.
Excuse me for a
minute.
Also #bullshit to the
highest degree.
Barbara found
evidence of this completely unbelievable crime and is using it to
make Brodey go along with her. She tried to make him change the stupid spelling of his name too but there was only so far he was willing to go.
He's so upset that he's driving the
motorcycle around in the middle of the night, trying to figure out
what to do. Brodey tells us that the motorcycle was an effort to
get his macho back after Mitch beat it out of him on the beach but
now he regrets it.
Suddenly there's a
rusty red pickup truck following right on his tail. He tries to get
it to pass him but it won't. He goes faster and faster, hoping to
lose it because that's a reasonable solution to his problem. In the end, he skids on a curve and slams his head so hard
into the rocks that we all bounce out of it and land in Max.
WALK IT OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!
Odds of Brodey
being dead: 60%
Max is upset and
looking for someone to talk to. She thinks of Rob but he's still
angry with her for some reason that I think Davidson forgot to tell
us. She tries Adler but he's not there because Davidson wants us to
suspect him of running Brodey into the cliffs. Wesley offers to
listen to her and she takes him up on it.
They go down into
the parlor and Wesley lights a fire. Max, who JUST told us how much
she loves Adler, realizes how attractive Wesley is now that he's not nerdy anymore. She asks him
what he thinks of Adler because she knows her brother is suspicious
of him and Wesley replies that he doesn't like Adler because Max
likes him too much. This seems to thrill her. They cuddle up
together on the sofa and talk for hours before she falls asleep in
his manly arms.
Whatever. I give
up.
We're hosted by
Zelda as the sun comes up. She feels responsible for everything and
wants to find a way to tell Max what's going on. She tells us that
Max doesn't know her enemies from her friends. I have no trouble
believing that. Max definitely isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.
It sounds like Zelda is being blackmailed too. She says she doesn't
want everyone to know her secret. Trust me, Zelda, most of us don't
even care.
Zelda panics when
she doesn't see Max in her bed. Running downstairs, she finds Wesley
sitting on the couch with Max's head in his lap.
She's sleeping,
you perverts.
As soon as Max
wakes up, we're back in her head. She's embarrassed to find out
she's been using Wesley as a pillow but he tells her he liked it.
#ick Max runs into Adler on her way up the stairs and asks him where
the hell he was the night before. He teases her about being
possessive and jealous and she thinks he's playing with her emotions
so she makes sure to mention she slept on Wesley the night before.
They finally
discover Brodey is missing at breakfast. No one bothers to go
looking for him until late afternoon when Max, Rob and Adler borrow
Mrs F's car to search the island for him. They see his motorcycle
first. It's completely trashed and they fear the worst. But Brodey,
minus several pints of blood from an obvious head injury, is still
breathing under a tree.
WALK IT
OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Odds of Brodey
being dead: 0% ((((shrug))))
They take Brodey
away in an ambulance. Mrs F shouts at Mrs D that her greed will
destroy them all. They discuss leaving again but again decide to
stay.

Someone worries
that the demon might be inhabiting one of their bodies. I guess that
WOULD be an interesting way to get around the “he” that Davidson
keeps using. If the demon was in a girl's body, he would still
consider himself to be a “he”. So whose head have we not been
in?
Lucy.
Adler.
Rob.
Mrs D.
Is that it? I

At some point
during the day, Max realizes the typewriter she's been using has the
brand name of 'Adler' on it. Adler had been standing by her when
Mrs D asked his name a few days ago and she's thinking he just used
the one he saw on the typewriter. Rob tells her not to jump to
conclusions because there are a lot of reasons a person might not
want to use their real name that don't involve being one of the
undead. Max is sure Adler is the demon and he has no actual name.
Odds of Adler
being the demon now: 0%
We hop into
Wesley's head for two whole paragraphs. He'd overheard Max and Rob.
He thought he had everything figured out until Brodey's accident but
now he's not so sure.
Well, that was a
useful section.
Max is hosting us
again. She's uneasy. They haven't heard anything about Brodey's
condition and she's worried the nurses might give him extra shots because his name is spelled so stupid. She's also pretty convinced the man she LOOOOOOOOOOVES is a demon and this bums her out for some reason. {{{Shrug}}} While the others play Monopoly, she gathers up trash and dishes and
takes everything into the kitchen. Wesley follows her in. She
thinks he's going to make some big declaration of love because she's
the protagonist and everything with a penis must instantly be
obsessed with her, but he wants to talk about Barbara. He reminds Max
that she humiliated Barbara right before the trip. He thinks Barbara
might be enacting some kind of revenge.
Wesley mentions
that Barbara was behind his transformation. She suggested he wear
different clothes to impress Max and had Lucy give him advice about
changing his hair. He also heard her tell Brodey how wonderful it
was to ride motorcycles over the dunes and he suspects she put
jealous thoughts into Mitch's ear about Denise. He thinks Barbara
was setting Max up to look like a giant idiot when Max told everyone
she believed in the demon legend.
Max questions this
because Barbara legitimately got hurt when she fell off the roof.
Wesley suspects that Barbara set up the stunt and had some kind of
safety line or something to fake a fall. Someone sabotaged her
though and she really got hurt. It's an okay theory as theories go.
Good on ya, Wesley.
Max confronts
Barbara who neither denies nor apologizes. She stands by her plan to
humiliate Max and is pissed it didn't work. Zelda admits that she
knew about the plan. Barbara tried to recruit her but she refused.
She also tells them that Barbara and Brodey had some kind of huge
argument and that Barbara talks about Adler in her sleep.
Mrs D calls from
the hospital. Brodey is in serious condition and his recovery isn't guaranteed.
Adler pulls Max
aside that evening. He says he can tell that she's pulling away from
him and he wonders if it's because of Wesley. She admits that she
has feelings for Wesley now that he's not nerdy anymore and Adler is pretty cool about it. I guess
they weren't so madly in love after all. Max confronts him about the
name and he tells her he was just trying to avoid paying taxes on his
summer income. He tells her that his name is really Andy and
they part ways with her being reassured that he might be human after
all. I'm with her. No self-respecting demon would be named Andy.
We hop into
Barbara's head for a few paragraphs. Everyone is treating her like
she's evil and she's sick of it. She falls asleep and dreams of
gasoline and fire. When she wakes up, her room is actually on fire. As she's
laying on the floor dying of smoke inhalation she flashes back to
earlier in the week. She and Brodey were having a clandestine
meeting when they saw the person stealing artifacts from the dig.
Brodey didn't recognize the person but Barbara did. She thought she could control the situation but she underestimated the evilness of the
thief.
It takes Zelda and
Max awhile to realize the house is burning down around them but they
finally get the memo and tie sheets together to get out the window.
There's a lot of drama as they try to locate the others. Denise and
Lucy got out and they helped Mrs F out. The boys are still asleep.
Max throws rocks at their window until they wake up. Rob and Wesley
make it out safely but no one has seen Barbara, Adler or Mitch.
Mrs F is confused
and rambling about the demon and two people named Herbert and
Caroline. Caroline is Mrs D's name. I have no idea who
Herbert is but I'm getting more and more suspicious of Mrs D.
Odds of Mrs D
being the bad guy: 75%
Because anyone else is too obvious, right? I mean this isn't going to be an "effing Justin" situation with Adler is it? Surely not.
It's raining and
the rising water has flooded out the highway. They have no way to
make it to the mainland. They decide to take shelter in a small
shed. On her way in, Max sees a light out in the ocean and realizes
there's a boat not far from the dig site. She tells Rob that she
thinks someone set the fire to distract everyone so they could steal
all the treasure. She and Rob decide to go down there and confront
the thief.
Wesley tries to
stop them. She says he'll never forgive himself if Max gets hurt.
Max stays behind and Wesley accompanies Rob down to the beach. We
briefly hop into Wesley's head to get an account of how difficult the
walk is due to the storm.
Max has no
intention of letting the boys handle things. She sets off on her own,
heading for the cave instead. How she knows the location of the cave
when absolutely no one has told her.......
Clearly Max is
just special, y'all.
She gets to the
cave and realizes it's been used to smuggle artifacts. Someone
appears and, to her surprise, it's someone she doesn't know.
He grabs her and slams her into a wall. Then Adler shows up.
Apparently he's the bad guy. Why did I think Davidson wouldn't make
it totally predictable. I gave her too much credit. Here I was
looking for an unobvious suspect when it was the COMPLETELY FREAKING
OBVIOUS SUSPECT AFTER ALL. Weak, Davidson. Very weak. Effing Justin.
Adler is freaking
out, trying to figure out what to do now. He tells Jerry to drag Max
far back in the tunnels and tie her up but not gag her. Clearly he
wants her to lead Rob and Wesley to their doom. If she's smart
she'll stay quiet. Jerry ties Max up and leaves her. She reassures
herself with the knowledge that Adler is not a demon.
I told you that
forever ago, Bitch.
We hop into
Wesley's head. He and Rob have had to abandon their plan to get to
the beach because the path is flooded. They head to the cave
instead. You know, the one that everyone just magically knows the
location of?
#bullshit
They hear people
inside and resolve to “take them out”.
We hop into
Zelda's head. The only useful thing we learn is that Mitch left on
foot right after the fire broke out to get help. No clue why she didn't tell us that back when everyone was freaking out about Mitch not getting out of the house. I think Davidson just forgot where he was again.
Max decides to use
the coral on the walls of the cave to free herself. It's actually
pretty smart (as much as it kills me to give her any credit). She
crawls out to the mouth of the cave just as Rob and Wes arrive to
save the day. There's a huge fight with tons of drama.....well, as
much drama as Davidson is capable of expressing with her writing
skill set (which isn't much). It ends with Max throwing a cup full of
acid in Adler's face. He goes over the side of the cliff and tries
to take Wesley with him. Wesley is fine though.
Mitch reaches
civilization and calls in the Coast Guard who arrives just in the
nick of time.
My, that was
mighty convenient.
Adler's body is
not found.
Time passes.
They're getting ready to go home. Max is completely devastated that
Wesley has reverted back to his previous clothes and hair style.
Because the person he is on the inside really doesn't matter to Max,
yo. She wants the “new Wes” and not the “old Wesley”. Yes,
it actually says that. He tells her he was joking with his old look
and she says “I could kill you. Don't scare me like that.”
Wesley. Honey.
Also, Max is THE
WORST.
Brodey is recovering and okay despite having a horrifically spelled name. Somehow he and
Lucy became a thing while he was in a coma. Even after he forced unwanted advances on her and made her cry. Davidson has no
idea what a healthy relationship is does she?
There's this weird
moment where Max realizes that she never saw Adler and Mrs F's cat in
the same place at the same time so she wonders if Adler IS the cat.
Yes, you fucking
read that right. She thinks Adler is the cat.
They all stand
around and talk about how glad they are that they came this summer
and how much they learned about themselves and life in general.
#fuckBarbara
That was an awful book, y'all.
It was slightly less racist than the others but only because there was only one
person of color to mention instead of 3 or 4. (Author Note: I totally forgot Zelda was Chinese! Davidson NEVER mentions it after the initial description. Why does she continually mention how "brown" and "Hispanic" Mitch is but lets Zelda's nationality drop? Did she FORGET her character was Chinese or does she just have a problem with the color of Mitch's skin?) I happy to report that this is the LAST Davidson I
own.
HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
